Description:
Vladimir Kanevsky's porcelain cabbages are among the most remarkable objects in contemporary American craft. Born in Ukraine and trained at the Kharkov Institute of Art and Design before emigrating to the United States, Kanevsky brought to his adopted country a command of porcelain technique rooted in the European tradition of luxury ceramic production — and applied it to a subject of radical modesty: the cabbage.

The choice is not accidental. The cabbage — with its layered, translucent leaves, its irregular form, its suggestion of growth arrested at the moment of perfection — is one of the most technically demanding subjects a ceramicist can attempt. Kanevsky's cabbages succeed completely. Each leaf is individually formed from hand-worked porcelain, each vein incised or built up by hand, each surface painted in multiple layers to replicate the way light passes through a real cabbage leaf. The result is an object that sits on the border between craft and fine art — a tureen that can be used, but that most buyers will rightly treat as a sculpture.

This example dates from 2014 and is signed by the artist. Kanevsky's work has been acquired by major collectors and exhibited internationally. His commissions include work for Christian Dior — a connection that places him firmly in the tradition of luxury applied art at its most ambitious. The cabbage tureen is the form for which he is best known and most sought after, and a 2014 signed example represents a significant opportunity for a collector entering or deepening a Kanevsky collection.

Condition:
The tureen is in excellent condition. The porcelain is intact with no cracks, chips or restoration. The hand-painted surface is fully preserved. The artist's signature is present and legible.
